Tips and Tricks (tutorials)

Tue Mar 21, 2006, 9:48 PM

All of my tips and tricks sheets:

Traditional Media:
pencil crayon baics
the white pencil crayon
layering pencil crayons
traditional inking

Digital Media:
digital colour basics
applying digital colour</b>
digital skintones
altering value
lighting (digital media)
basic digital textures
manipulating textures
Scanner and Cleanup (Prep for CG) Tutorial

These aren't tutorials, but they do have some nifty tips:
A step-by-step process of a painting.
Making of Mac

I am always open to suggestions for tips/tricks sheets; right now I don't have a scanner so I can only do digital related tips sheets :3

I really admire artists who put efforts on sharing their knowledge without waiting anything in return.

Thank you so much and keep your work.

Hey looks like you read all of these so here goes. Thanks for your tutorials they are very helpful. I'd like to ask that you also make a step by step or visual tutorial, I know it would help me a lot! Thanks anyway. <3

Yeah I was considering making one of those, the only problem is that I'm not really a certified art instructor and what I have to add I think is pretty well covered by other tutorials on DA. I may make one anyway though, thanks for the interest :)

I would really really really strongly suggest not seeking references for anatomy. The ONLY real way to learn it is to draw from photos or real life... I have read many "anatomy tutorials" and some of them offer helpful tips for beginners they are all crutches and its best to just learn properly from the source!

Hey, no problem! :D
Well, I think they're all good as it is -I still have yet to try some of them. But if you really want to redo some of the older ones when you get the chance, I don't see anything wrong with that. ^^

Haha well I just wanted to change the layout and make them more readable mostly....

If you have any suggestions for new ones I'm always open for that, too!

Ah yes, I can see what you mean about making them more readable. To me, the only thing that makes it a little hard to read is the main typeset. I'm not sure if it's just the size being on the tiny side or the font being quite ...narrow? Although, the headers and the colours I think are fine though. ^^;

New tutorials... mm... since it's a digital media, maybe something on monitor calibration? ...Or not. I did notice a couple of deviations of comic pages in your gallery. Maybe some tips and tricks on comic layout? These are just suggestions. ^^;

I was wondering if you have any ideas on making a hair detail (digital) tutorial. Or if you know of someone who has one.... You see I have just started using a tablet for my works, after moving from fractal and 3D art, so thats why I ask, you can look on my profile to see what piece I am mainly talking about, "Brain Damage".

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not really that great at hair (like I don't have any special tips or tricks that I coudl think of putting in a tutorial...) but if you search around dA, I've heard some people say there are other useful things out there, likely there's a few good hair ones! I'll check out the pic and see if I can help any :)

ohhh I have no idea sorry!!! I am going to try to redo most of the old ones. And I have a mixed media one coming in soon... I am just super busy with school so I can't guess when! Sorry! I think it'll be mostly the same, I just wanna update the actual skintones. They feel a bit orange to me.. or something!

I think it's REALLY good that you do these tutorials! They're helpful no matter what level you are and I think they do encourage improvement rather than kind of a "this is the process" but without moving forward.. (one day I'll learn to speak clearly, I promise! o_o; ) I mean that there are some tutorials that just seem to ...Go through an obvious process not adding anything to people's general knowledge/common sense. These do add to what people know/clear up what they thought they knew (or I think so anyway). They're clear and easy to understand without treating people like idiots XD
So I think all in all they're helpful (as a good tut. should be) and you did a good job with them. Keep 'em comin' ^^
(After looking at your last tutorial, I decided to comment here instead of on the actual piece 'cause it's kind of a general statement really)

hahha thanks so much :) I totally agree. I do like step by steps because it gives you a kind of inside eye to how a pic was created, but they honestly don't add much. Most of them are at least 90% the same, so I try to take the interesting 10% and expand upon those and just focus on those. Like you said, it's concise and encourages specific improvements.

I'm TRYING to do one on backgrounds, but it's just so hard to write a general one. Also, I've been fiddling with writing one on composition, but it's proving to be so much work ;_;

I like step-by-steps for the same reason I like to look at sketches and other artist's workspaces; it's the air of creativity! (in the sense that something is being created not like.. 'being creative';) They're a cool look into the artist's mind, but they're by no means a 'tutorial'.

Oh gosh, I wish you all the luck in the world!! That's something I would never know how to approach X_X; but it would be VERY, very useful to have one on both those subjects.
A composition tutorial would have to focus a lot on 'balance' of a piece I suppose and I'm not sure if that's something you can just see/feel or something that you can be taught to understand or what, but it would be a tremendous help to many artists to learn how to balance a piece and make it feel stable!
In fact, I don't even know how it works sometimes when I see pieces that seem 'uneven' compositionally, but still somehow work!
As far as background goes....well, if ya do it, I'd study it like the bible =_=;;
I dunno what the hell my problem with backgrounds is, but sometimes seeing a tutorial like that helps me to understand my own process a little more and then whether or not I use the specifics of the tut, just by understanding what I do, it's a ton of help.
Take your time with it and I'm sure it'll end up great (:

Wow! Thanks for the tutorials for the traditional media. =D

I've been meaning to do more traditional stuff, but I've always been hesitant to use it. Luckily I have a good idea of what to do now.

Thanks so much!
