Sadly, the weather here in Vancouver has been pretty dreary, even in May :( Feel blessed if it's nice wherever you are! All of this time indoors has kept me drawing, knitting, and dancing. I also have been reading more. Anyone have any good book recommendations? Please include a short synopsis with title and auther so I can decide if its my cup of tea or not!

I hope to be posting some art soon, but I am still scannerless and tabletless so I don't have too much to show for now, sorry guys :(

I've been reading Water For Elephants. It's by Sara Gruen and it's about a kid named Jacob who was attending veterinary school at an Ivy League college and almost right before he takes his final exams, he finds out both his parents died in a car accident. He's heartbroken, obviously, and wanders off and ends up on the train of the Benzini Brothers' circus. They hire him as a vet and it's not long before he falls in love with a girl named Marlena - who is married to his boss.

My summary sucks. It's actually really beautifully written and it's been on the NYT bestseller list.

My other favorites recently were the Hunger Games series. It's about a girl named Katniss who lives in a kind of post-apocalyptic world where the Capital rules over 12 districts of people, and keeps them under control by holding annually a sort of reality show called the Hunger Games. Each district draws out of a hat one boy and one girl between 12 and 18 and they're sent off to a deserted area and then they all try to kill each other. The last one standing wins.
It's a three book series and while it sounds really unlikely, it's well done and sounds perfectly natural. Everyone I've talked to loved those books.
Good luck! :)

Company of Lairs, by Karen Maitland
Released by Penguin in England.

It's a story about a group of people deciding to travel together, while the plague is entering England during the Dark Ages. But are they all who they claim to be?

Beautiful historical roman, that really pulls you into that time and age, and you really want to know more about the characters.

The Centauri Device, by M. John Harrison

(backcover)
To all appearances, John Truck was just another lowlife space captain. But appearances can be deceptive. He was also the last of the centaurans (or at least, half of him was) which in turn meant he was the only person who could operate the centauri device, a sentient bomb which might hold the key to ending a vicious space war once and for all.

A great sci-fi story, and I kept imagining Bruce Willis as the main character, so you can guess how active the story is. Also incredible is the way religion is used in the story, it will give you the bejeebles. xD

Hey, I don't want to flaunt anything, But I actually work at a small Chapters bookstore in Nova Scotia, and I would love to recommend some great books, first and foremost, Hunger Games, it's a trilogy about a post apocalyptic North America where only 13 small districts still exist and the "Capitol" controls it all. One day, the 13th district says they don't want to be controlled anymore, they fight, and the Capitol Wipes them off the face of the Earth.

Every year after that, the Capitol reminds all the districts that they're in charge by taking a boy and girl from each district and getting them to fight each other to the death in a giant arena, i.e. The Hunger Games.

The story unravels when the little sister of our heroine from District 12 has her name picked, refusing to let her sister go to her death, Katniss Everrdeen takes her place.
the first book is the story of her will to survive, and realizing what the Capitol is willing to do to stop her.

I would love to recommend lots more, but it all depends what you're looking for, do you want a light and easy read, intense, romantic, funny, or all of the above?
A way to figure out what you would like, is by telling me something that you've read recently.

I'll be happy to supply suggestions from there

Glad you like the stores so much, books rock. :D

Hmm I like general fiction or non-fiction. I don't care for romance, and I'm not looking to read sci-fi or fantasy right now.

I really like scientific books, or books that make you think. I can handle quite technical or "heavy" reads as well. I also like easy reads, such as "Lullibyes for little criminals" which I found quite interesting, despite how simple the language was.

Sorry I forgot to say about "Gods behaving badly" Even though its fictional about the Greek gods, the view they take on explaining older religions really made me think, that's why I thought you might like it!!
