My summary sucks. It's actually really beautifully written and it's been on the NYT bestseller list.
My other favorites recently were the Hunger Games series. It's about a girl named Katniss who lives in a kind of post-apocalyptic world where the Capital rules over 12 districts of people, and keeps them under control by holding annually a sort of reality show called the Hunger Games. Each district draws out of a hat one boy and one girl between 12 and 18 and they're sent off to a deserted area and then they all try to kill each other. The last one standing wins.
It's a three book series and while it sounds really unlikely, it's well done and sounds perfectly natural. Everyone I've talked to loved those books.
Good luck!
I have heard many good things about the hunger games now, and the Water for Elephants sounds interesting!
Released by Penguin in England.
It's a story about a group of people deciding to travel together, while the plague is entering England during the Dark Ages. But are they all who they claim to be?
Beautiful historical roman, that really pulls you into that time and age, and you really want to know more about the characters.
The Centauri Device, by M. John Harrison
(backcover)
To all appearances, John Truck was just another lowlife space captain. But appearances can be deceptive. He was also the last of the centaurans (or at least, half of him was) which in turn meant he was the only person who could operate the centauri device, a sentient bomb which might hold the key to ending a vicious space war once and for all.
A great sci-fi story, and I kept imagining Bruce Willis as the main character, so you can guess how active the story is. Also incredible is the way religion is used in the story, it will give you the bejeebles. xD
Every year after that, the Capitol reminds all the districts that they're in charge by taking a boy and girl from each district and getting them to fight each other to the death in a giant arena, i.e. The Hunger Games.
The story unravels when the little sister of our heroine from District 12 has her name picked, refusing to let her sister go to her death, Katniss Everrdeen takes her place.
the first book is the story of her will to survive, and realizing what the Capitol is willing to do to stop her.
I actually had that book recommended to me by a friend already so I want to try it.. anything else to recommend?
A way to figure out what you would like, is by telling me something that you've read recently.
I'll be happy to supply suggestions from there
Glad you like the stores so much, books rock.
I really like scientific books, or books that make you think. I can handle quite technical or "heavy" reads as well. I also like easy reads, such as "Lullibyes for little criminals" which I found quite interesting, despite how simple the language was.
