Fitness Routine!

Fri Apr 17, 2009, 8:55 PM
Fitness is a very important part of my life. I used to find it difficult to motivate myself to work out, and while it cane be time consuming I definately miss it when I miss it for more than a few days! I'm wondering if you guys work out and what you do for fitness! Any good tips about working out?

So I guess I'll go first:
I work out at the gym 3 - 6 days a week, I try to go 5 - 6 times but obviously it's quite time consuming and can't always be done. Every time I go I do at least 30 min eliptical, 15 min stair clinber, and 15 min abs. If time permits I also spin and use the treadmill. If the weather is nice, I also like to jog outside. Unfortunately, I'm not much of a sporty person! But I do dance (latin, ballroom)!

And as for tips, I guess I'd say: Always push yourself. Every week you should be working out harder than the last. Be your own personal trainer! That said, if you're having an off day its ok to work at last weeks pace as long as you don't cop out at all! Staying in the schedule of going to the gym or working out is important!

When it comes to muscle building, especially abs, it's important to inhale as you work and exhale as you relax. It's important to focus on the muscle as you work out. This reduces risk of hurting yourself and I think you get more out of your workout if you do this!

Stretching out both before AND after a workout is super critical. Don't forget: Flexible muscles are healthy muscles! Stretching out reduces risk of injury and decreases "down time" that you have to wait while your body heals itself before you can work out more. Some people say you should only work out every second day, but I think you should be fine to do it back-to-back so long as you focus on different muscle groups (ie lower body then upper body) except core which should be done EVERY DAY if you want a nice flat stomach!

I think my hugest pet peeve is watching people work out with poor form. It just drives me nuts! If you don't understand an exersize don't be embarrased to ask for help! Having a second opinion can also give you insight on how often to perform each exersize and what to move onto once you have improved your muscles, because like I said you want to always push yourself!

Don't forget that no matter what genetics delt you, high metabolism or good muscle structure won't make you fit! You have to work hard to stay healthy!

I'm so bad for a fitness routine. =( I've had a pass to the gym for the past year, but everytime I get a routine going, school and work get in the way and throw everything off! It's awesome to hear that you have such a schedule, though! I can't wait till exams are over and I can move from my desk. =.=

thanks alot for the tips. I've been trying to workout alot more lately (swimsuit season is just around the corner XD) but alot of the time I don't think I'm using correct form because when I do a certain excersise I sometimes strain other parts of my body ( like my neck) and/or I don't feel 'the burn' where I'm supposed to. That's really my only problem. I don't really have a way of going to a gym or talking to a trainer right now D: so my only examples are on youtube XD but I have found some that work. and running always works..cept...I hate running XD.

when iwas more financially stable, I was more into working out.... use to go to work, come home, change, head to the gym, jog a mile, play basketball for about 2-3 hours and then do a full work out with a mile run afterward.... was averaging a nice 7-8 minute mile at that point without going 100% those were nice times=]

yeah I did a 7 min mile at my best.... but that was only for like 30 - 40 min. I'm training for a half marathon, it's sort of far more rough!

Yeah gym's are so expensive eh??? Thank god I still get it for cheap at my uni!
:iconkitton:
running can be hard on your knees! Try to chose chip trails or run in a park because the cement is murder!

yeah I hurt my neck a lot, too! HAHA! It's a problem for me as well! My only trouble spots left are my inner thighs and my stomach-but I think most girls feel that way!
:iconkitton:
yeah totally! Life and school really get in the way of working out!! But I guess it's all about prioritizing in the end.. with what little time you have left!
:iconthelearningcurv:
wow, 7 minute miles for 30-40 minutes? wow, thats like almost 6, 7 miles an hour! nice=] my BEST time was 6:05 when iwas trying out for my college bball team 9thats a whole other story). The gym's prices aren't the issue, it was time that work allows for.....

yeah I USED to be hardcore. That was my best time.... but really it's super difficult to maintain that. I find that jogging has become harder and harder on me... my eliptical makes me soft!!

xD This journal is perfectly timed cause just tonight I was talking about how hard it has been to get motivated to work out lately LOL.
:/ It can be so frustrating now because its the end of senior year and all this college stuff and school finals are happening.

yeah its hard to stay motivated... but for me once I forced myself to get into it for a few months it got a lot easier. Sometimes I slip out, especially with exams, but it's easier to jump back in once you're "used" to it!
