Photography

I was thinking about doing more photography, specifically of people. I was hopeful that having a background in art would help me with photography (like understanding compositions, shapes, colours, lighting, etc) So I was just wondering what sage knowledge you guys could pass onto me?

What kind of camera do you like best and why? Do you have any tips and tricks? Like which angles do you find work best? If you were to do an actual photoshoot what recommendation do you have for lighting, photoshop, etc?

Even if you're not a pro, any advice or tips or discussion on the subject would be interesting!

Well I only consider myself a beginner but it can be a pretty expensive pass time, especially if you look to get an SLR model. I'd recommend getting a good photography book to get you started.

Come to think about it what you say is probably true. Art and photography share a lot when it comes to composition and framing the subject. Really I guess you can go two ways. One buy a fairly cheap point and shoot to get to grip with things. Or two do some research and find a nice SLR and jump in the deep end, even the budget ones these days are pretty good, just remember that you need a good lens to go with the body!

Yeah I should check out the library to start haha! I'm trying to figure out lighting stuff first... like using umbrellas to diffuse light and stuff!

Hahaha I won't be able to afford a nice camera until I graduate, unfortunately... and I think that really makes a huge difference unfortuantely! Well I'll see what I can do!

I think that the foundation of what makes a good painting and photograph are probably the same, but obviously the technique and approach are really different!

What camera do you use and what is your favourite subjects for photography?

I love any picture with a nice, textured background. My uncle is paul mobley, and he just published a book called "The American Farmer" there are some samples of his photography on his website. [link]

Good Luck! Love your stuff.

I highly recommend the Canon Rebel XTi for beginners. It's cheap compared to most digital SLRs but very very good for it's price and an excelent starting place. And the wonderful thing about SLR's is you can stick to the kit lens until you feel ready to move up to a better lens... so you can progress slowly until you really feel the need to upgrade the body :)

As far as shooting models goes, lower angles for short models (to make them look taller). Also if you are working digitally, look into CMYK skin charts and such so you can edit the skin accurately in photoshop or similar programs. :)

CMYK skin charts?

Yeah, I love the shooting from below trick, I always do that for my friends so they look thinner in the pics ;) Great tips! Do you have anything else for me? This is the advice I was looking for!
