This is the first page from a Star Ocean the Second story Doujinshi.
[edit: toned] This page still isn't perfectly complete. There are some details I can't work out on this monitor (its so bright, so I'm always worried because what I see isn't what everyone else sees :\) I intend to fine detail the background (stones), and fix the ugly clouds. I'm never really happy with my toning, but I'm really new to it, too. I'd rather try to move onto the next few pages rather than fiddle with this, even though I don't really like it that much...
Changes in character design:
Any fan will notice that the character designs have been modified. I’ve decided to stick with Celine’s design from the official comic for the story. I also modified her hat. Rena’s design is more or less the same, save for minor details (example: her socks don’t go as high). Gyoro and Ururun have been modified completely because I find their official designs boring.
The Page itself:
I’m not really fond of this page. None of the backgrounds turned out like I had wanted. Some people may notice that these backgrounds look similar to my original comic project, and thats simply because this is the way I draw forest. This page feels really naked without tones because I plan to hide a LOT of mistakes with it (examples: Ashton’s arms, the branches in the first panel). I do like how Rena’s figure and Celines face came out though.
I think you did a good job. It's way better than what I could ever accomplish. It's very well done from the way I see it. You should be proud and as for the artist interpretation of the characters.
Well I don't have a membership so I can't give an "official critique" but I'll give my thoughts.
Positive: Your perspective with the characters is fantastic, The anatomy is is done very skillfully and I love the position of Rena's feet (I know, I'm weird like that) and you put great details on the dragons which paid off.
Negative: I felt as if the background got a bit lost in the second panel. The left side is great, but as it reaches the ground level, I feel like I'm looking at the tops of trees rather than bushes on the ground. You could possibly try and add blades of grass on the outside of the rocks to make it look more like the ground. Ashton's arms seem a bit awkward too, but that's just me nitpicking.
But all and all it's a great picture, you certainly draw better backgrounds than myself (which is what I'm working on now)...BUT I do have a question!
Do you use traditional tones or do you use photoshop? Just wondering.
this is utterly amazing. im a huge fan of the game and ashton looks stunning! especially gyoro and ururun. you put so much details into it. is this readable anywhere?
I enjoy them.
I look forward to seeing more!
And maby an anime thats actualy based on the game.
